Gloucester Upweller

We launched this upweller in 2017 as a pilot program. We partnered with Maritime Gloucester to build the upweller on their newly renovated main pier in downtown Gloucester. The primary purpose of the project is to collect water quality data from water entering and exiting the upweller. That helps measure the oysters’ impact on local water pollution. Besides that, we also run educational tours of the upweller all season long for visitors and student groups.

In the three seasons the upweller has been open, it’s become a local landmark. It’s also nurtured almost 200,000 oysters, which have been released at sites around the North Shore.

Current state regulations prohibit the release of oysters in restricted waters. Prior to release, we work with the Division of Marine Fisheries and the town's shellfish warden or constable to select appropriate release sites.
